実はまだX Window Systemが動いていませんでしたので、その設定です。
nVidiaのビデオカードを使っている人は「Kernelのアップグレード(2.4系列)」を見て、nVidiaのDRIドライバを設定しておきましょう。
X Window Systemのインストール
なぜかX Window Systemが完全にインストールされていないのでインストールしました。これが必要なのは私の環境だけかもしれません(X周りはセキュリティアップデートあったせいかも)。

Xserver-commonの設定
インストール中にXserverの設定についていろいろ聞かれます。
最初は、XserverをDebianのシステムで管理するかどうかを聞かれます。これはYESを選びます。あとはデフォルトのままでENTERキーを押せばよいでしょう。

Xserver-xfree86の設定
ここではXserverの設定が聞かれます。重要です。真剣に応えましょう。
まずは、Xserverの設定をDebianのシステムで管理するかどうかを聞かれます。
これにはYESを選びます。

ビデオカードの設定
ここからが重要です。まずはどのX serverを使用するか聞かれます。これはビデオカードのチップによって最適なX Serverが異なるからです。大体のビデオカードは「vesa」でいけると思いますが、専用のX Serverがある場合はそれを選択しましょう。私は、nVidiaのGeForce2 MX400を使っているので、「nv」を選択します。

次にビデオカードの名前を聞かれます。適当に入力しましょう。私は「GeForce2 MX400」としました。

次はビデオカードが装着されているPCIバスの番号などを聞かれます。が、ここは空欄で大丈夫です。次に進みましょう。

次にビデオカードのメモリ量を入力します。ここは空欄でもよいようですが、私は念のため入力しています。単位がキロバイト単位なので、メガバイトの値に1024をかけた値を入力します。
私の場合はビデオRAMが64MBなので、65536を入力します。

その次は、Xの画面を描写するのに、直接ビデオカードのチップを操作するようにするか、Linuxカーネルのフレームバッファという機能を介して操作するかを選択します。
デフォルトはフレームバッファを使うようになっていますが、私はNoを選択しました。理由は今までもそうだったからということでそれほど自信はありません。

キーボードの設定
ここからはキーボードの設定です。まずは、XKB ruleというのを聞かれますが、デフォルトのまま(xfree86)でOKです。

マウスの設定
ここからはマウスの設定です。まずはマウスが接続されているデバイスが指定します。マウスをPS/2で接続している人は/dev/psauxとなります。USBは使ったことがないのでちょっとわかりません。/dev/input/miceのような気がします。

次はマウスの種類を指定します。多くのスクロールマウスはマイクロソフトのインテリマウス互換なので、一番上のImPS/2を選択しました。

次は、マウスの左右ボタンの同時押しで真中ボタンをエミュレートするかどうかを聞いてきます。スクロールマウスの場合はスクロールボタンが真中ボタンとなるのですが、念のためYesとしておきました。

モニタの設定
ここからはモニタの設定です。まず名前を付けるように言われるので、適当な名前を入れます。

Advancedを選択すると、モニタがサポートしている水平周波数と垂直周波数の範囲を聞かれますので、モニタの説明書をチェックしておきましょう。
最初は水平周波数の範囲を入れます。

次は使用する解像度の指定です。必要なところにスペースでマークをつけていきましょう。

その次はデフォルトの色数です。十分なビデオRAMがあるならば一番大きな値にしておきましょう。私は24です。

モジュールの指定
次にX Window Systemで使用するモジュールの設定行います。最初にいろいろ説明がでるので読んでおきましょう。
組み込むモジュールを選択するところではポイントは2つあります。
1つはTrueTypeフォントを使用するためのモジュールの指定です。「freetype」と「xtt」の2つがあるので、このどちらかを指定します。両方はダメです。私はより高機能な「xtt」を使用します。
もう1つは、後でnVidiaのドライバを使用するための設定です。nVidiaのドライバを使用する場合は、「glx」が必要となります。また、「GLcore」と「dri」を組み込んではいけません。
というわけで私は以下のような指定にしました。

設定ファイルの書き込み
最後に設定ファイルを保存するかを聞かれるので、Yesを選択して終了します。その後にもDRIの設定やらを聞かれるのでこれもYesにしておきましょう。
動作確認
ではテストをしてみましょう。一般ユーザでstartxコマンドを実行して、Xの画面(KDEの画面)になればOKです。動くのを確認したらAltキー・Ctrlキー・BSキーを同時に押して、いったんX Window Systemを強制終了させましょう。
nVidiaドラバの使用
nVidiaから供給されているドライバを使うとより高速な描写が期待できます(多分)。せっかくなのでそれを使いましょう。
nVidiaのカーネルドライバの設定
まず「Kernelのアップグレード(2.4系列)」を見てnVidiaのドライバモジュールを使用できるようにします。
nVidiaのXFree86ドライバの設定
次にXFree86用のnVidiaドライバのソースパッケージをインストールします。
# apt-get install nvidia-glx-src
その後に次のコマンドでバイナリパッケージを作成した後にインストールします。

XF86config-4の編集
次に先ほど作成した/etc/X11/XF86Config-4を編集します。変更するところは

これでstartxをしてみてください。X Window Systemの画面になったときに、一瞬nVidiaのロゴが見えれば成功です。
成功したらまたAlt+Ctrl+BSで一旦終了させてから、gdmを立ち上げましょう。
